We carry a fully stocked pharmacy from flea products to prescription diets. We only carry products we feel are the best on the market. We wouldn't skimp on our own pet's health, why should we do any less for yours? Most products we carry require a doctor patient relationship. Therefore it is necessary for you to be a client of ours and your pet must be seen on a regular, annual basis.
A Word of Caution about Internet Pharmacies
To read cautions straight from the FDA's web site please click here.
The Milan Veterinary Clinic offers an in-house pharmacy so you can enjoy these benefits:
- The convenience of having prescriptions filled during your visit
High-quality medications guaranteed by the drug manufacturer and stored under the proper conditions
A thorough understanding of your pet's medical history and needs
On-going monitoring of your pet's health and medications
Our prices are reasonable; comparable to the internet prices
If you get your pet it's medication(s) the same they are here for an examination, we do not have to charge you Michigan sales tax
If it's a matter of you not being able to come pick up your pet's medication we can always mail it to you for a small shipping feeTelevision commercials, pet supply catalogs, and Internet pharmacies that promise a "deal" on pet prescriptions may be misleading. The Florida Board of Pharmacy has disciplined these companies for dispensing drugs not approved by the FDA and contracting of veterinarians to write prescriptions without examining the animal. The companies were fined more than $67,000, placed on probation for 3 years, must perform 200 hours of community service, and must complete continuing-education courses. These are serious violations.
If you purchase prescriptions through such pharmacies, please be aware of these risks:
The drug manufacturer may not guarantee medications. Such as treatment for heartworm disease should you dog contract it while on the medication.
- Some medications may be foreign drugs that may not have the same quality and purity assurance as the United States does. It is generally illegal to dispense foreign drugs in the United States, including foreign versions of U.S. products.
- Some medications may be imitations of approved drugs.
- Selling prescriptions directly to consumers without a veterinarian-client-patient relationship may pose health risks to patients.
If you wish to fill your pet's prescriptions elsewhere, we require you to sign a informed consent form for our files (your pet's medical history) and you must pick up your prescription to have it filled elsewhere. We do not and will not deal directly with any internet or catalog company that sells products that are available here.
Before we can write you a prescription we must:
Have a patient - doctor relationship established and maintained within the past 12 months.
- Check your pet's medical history and confirming that your pet is well enough to take the medication. Weak, sick or older pets should not take certain medications.
- Review your pet's medical record to ensure vital tests are current. For example, your pet needs a heartworm test with negative results before taking a heartworm preventive. Certain arthritis (pain) or many daily long term medications also require routine blood tests to monitor liver or kidney function.
- Confirm the appropriate dose, how often the medication should be given, and the number of refills.
- We caution you that you should verify that the pharmacy you are using is licensed with the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy. Our doctor(s) strongly prefer to only write a prescription that will be filled by a company with a state pharmacy license.
- Record the prescription in your pet's medical record so we can carefully monitor its interaction with other medications your pet may be taking.
- Please note that most pharmacies require the original prescription form. No copies will be accepted. Therefore you must get a physical address to mail in the prescription to them. We do not fax to any outside pharmacies to fill prescriptions we carry in stock. Of course this may take longer for you to get your prescription so please plan ahead.
If you have questions, please ask us. We strive to provide the highest quality medications for your pet.
